To compare the attributes of two things that are equal, we use the pattern:<\/p>\n<p><strong>as + <em>adjective describing the attribute<\/em> + as<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EXAMPLES<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tom is<strong> as tall as<\/strong> his brother<\/li>\n<li>I am <strong>as hungry as<\/strong> you are.<\/li>\n<li>Sally is <strong>as nice as<\/strong> Jane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WHEN ATTRIBUTES ARE NOT EQUAL<\/p>\n<p>When the two attributes are not equal, there are three contructions with equivalent meanings.<\/p>\n<p>Either use the pattern:<\/p>\n<p><strong>not as + adjective describing the attribute + as<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or use the pattern:<\/p>\n<p><strong>less + adjective describing the attribute + than<\/strong>: This construction is more frequent with some adjectives than with others.<\/p>\n<p>Or use the pattern:<\/p>\n<p><strong>comparative + than<\/strong>: This construction may require changing the order of the phrase or using the opposing adjective.<\/p>\n<p>EXAMPLES<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mount Blanc is<strong> not as high as<\/strong> Mount Everest.<\/li>\n<li>Mount Blanc is <strong>less high than<\/strong> Mount Everest.<\/li>\n<li>Mount Blanc is<strong> lower than<\/strong> Mount Everest.<\/li>\n<li>Mount Everest is<strong> higher than<\/strong> Mount Blanc.<\/li>\n<li>Norway is <strong>not as sunny as<\/strong> Vietnam.<\/li>\n<li>Norway is<strong> less sunny than<\/strong> Vietnam.<\/li>\n<li>Vietnam is<strong> sunnier than<\/strong> Norway.<\/li>\n<li>Norway is <strong>cloudier<\/strong> <strong>than<\/strong> Vietnam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>English Grammar\u00a0&gt;\u00a0Adjectives When comparing the attributes of two things, we use a standard set of constructions.
